Google Pixelbook Go
At number 5 on our list is the Google Pixelbook Go. The Google Pixelbook Go is a refresh of the already impressive Google Pixelbook, with a smart new design, a longer battery life, and a larger touchscreen. The best news is how little weight it has.
Starting at just 2 pounds, it’s the lightest 13-inch Chromebook we’ve tested. The size also makes it more portable than most 13-inch laptops, and the grippy, rubberized backing makes carrying it even easier. The laptop’s excellent battery life is also a big step forward, and it’s the main reason we feel comfortable giving the Pixelbook Go our Editors’ Choice.
The new design also includes a larger touchscreen, making it even easier to use when paired with a pen. The screen also has a higher pixel density, making the text sharp and images richer. The display is bright and vivid, and with 300 nits of brightness, it’s plenty bright for use in direct sunlight or while camping.
In our lab tests, the Go lasted 12 hours, and 12 minutes, which is better than average but not the longest battery life of any Chromebook. Still, with fast charging, you’ll never get more than 2 hours of battery time with a 20-minute charge. A larger glass touchpad makes it easier to use with a stylus, while the backlit keyboard makes typing easier in dark rooms and on planes.
The keyboard is also comfortable to use, with slightly concave keys. The speakers are loud and decent, but the audio is tinnier than most laptops so that you may want Bluetooth headphones or a soundbar. The Google Pixelbook Go also has solid performance. The 8th Gen Intel Core i5 processor is speedy and responsive, and our review unit also came with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
ASUS R O G Flow Z13
Up next in 4th place is the ASUS R O G Flow Z13. The R O G Flow Z13 is a gorgeous, powerful, portable gaming machine that packs incredible performance into a handheld package. ROG’s Aura Sync lighting peripheral sets this laptop apart, and the built-in stylus makes taking notes on the fly a breeze.
You won’t find better gaming performance in this form factor at any price. But its high price tag and bulky size are significant drawbacks. The Z13’s performance puts it on par with many gaming laptops with much larger screens, but its 13.4-inch 120Hz display makes it better suited for fast-paced action games, like first-person shooters or strategy games. R O G also gives the Z13 more connectivity options than most gaming laptops, with 4 USB 3 ports, 1 USB Type-C port, 1 HDMI port with 4K support, a Thunderbolt 3 port, a microSD card reader, and 802.11A C Wi-Fi. But its size and weight are significant drawbacks.
The Z13’s performance puts it on par with many gaming laptops with much larger screens, but its 13.4-inch 120 Hertz display makes it better suited for gamers and programmers. The Z13’s screen is gorgeous, and the keyboard provides solid feedback, that helps programmer to code comfortably for a long hour session. But it’s also big and heavy, so it’s better suited for programming and gaming than long stints of reading or watching the video.
Apple MacBook Air
At number 3 we have Apple MacBook Air. The 13-inch MacBook Air is thinner and lighter but still packed with the powerful features of the previous generation. It has a much faster 8-core, 2.7GHz Intel Core i5 processor with Turbo Boost speeds up to 4.3GHz, compared to the previous generation’s 6-core 2.5GHz Intel Core i7 chip, as well as an updated 8-core, 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 chip for the 13-inch MacBook Air.Â
While the 15-inch and 13-inch models have 8GB of RAM, the 11-inch model has 4GB of RAM. Storage options remain a 256GB SSD, a 128GB SSD, or a 1TB HDD. Apple’s 8-core, 2.7GHz Intel Core i5 processor performs well in our tests, but Apple has yet to confirm whether it will support Windows in Boot Camp.Â

The 13-inch model is 0.6 inches thin, the 15-inch model for 0.9 inches, and the 11-inch model at 0.8 inches. The 13-inch display features the same 2560-by-1600 resolution as the 11-inch and 15-inch models, while the 15-inch and 11-inch models have resolution options of 2560-by-1440 and 1920-by-1080, respectively.
The 11-inch model is just 0.6 pounds, the 13-inch model for 1.1 pounds, and the 15-inch model is 2 pounds. The 13-inch Apple MacBook Air laptop is excellent for students and indie filmmakers.
LG gram 17Z90Q
At number 2 on our list is the LG gram 17Z90Q. The LG gram is the lightest, thinnest, and most powerful ultraportable laptop we’ve ever tested. Its newest 7th Generation Intel processor, 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and blazing-fast PCIe NVMe SSD give it enough horsepower to handle just about any task you throw at it.Â
The gram’s 17-inch 1080p IPS display is bright and vivid, and it produced solid colors in our tests. The gram is also surprisingly comfortable to use, thanks to its slim 0.26-inch frame, making it easy to hold in one hand for long periods.
The webcam produces solid images, and although its microphone isn’t as loud or clear, it’s adequate, if not quite excellent. Also, the gram’s speakers are good, if not quite decent. The battery life is generous, particularly if you’re using the built-in Dolby Vision, and the laptop has two USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 3.
However, we’d be remiss not to point out that the Thunderbolt 3 ports aren’t Thunderbolt 3.0 but the 2.0 standard, which limits you to the slower Thunderbolt 3.0 speeds you’re used to. The LG gram is the lightest, thinnest, and most powerful ultraportable laptop we’ve ever tested.
Razer Blade 14 Gaming Laptop 6900HX
Finally the number 1 on our list is the Razer Blade 14 Gaming Laptop 6900HX. When it comes to high-performance gaming, the Razer Blade 14 Gaming Laptop has more power than most table saws. It’s the fastest gaming laptop we’ve tested, and it handled every task we tried, including maxing out the settings on Gears of War 4 at 1080p with maxed out settings.
It’s the most stable system we’ve seen and easily the lightest and thinnest gaming laptop we’ve tested. The 14-inch screen, technically not a 144Hz screen, has 165 Hz refresh rates, and the high refresh rates make it less jittery than many 120 Hz screens. And 1080p resolution is perfect for gaming and watching movies. The speakers are also decent for a business-class laptop, and Razer charges a modest amount for the Chroma RGB lighting.
The biggest drawback: The Blade 14 costs more than our budget pick and a lot more than most midrange gaming systems. The Razer Blade 14 is the fastest gaming laptop we’ve ever tested, and it’s practically a desktop replacement. Its 6900HX CPU and RTX 3080 Ti GPU deliver desktop-class gaming performance, and the battery lasts long enough for an ambitious gamer to get a 9-hour day of gaming on the battery.
