Types of Steel Bars used in Construction

Steel Bars are possessed to give a structure that no other material can when we talk about construction. The sturdiness and potency that steel provides are not matched by wood or even concrete. It is getting more and more common for steel to be utilized in construction, and other people are preferring steel: thanks to its various advantages.

Steel buildings are built using various frames also, for instance, clear span, modular, single slope, etc. Building steel structures is extremely easy and less time-consuming when it involves construction. With its numerous other factors that have proved advantageous, steel, lately, has become the foremost sought-after way of constructing buildings.

Steel buildings are known to possess higher resistance due to their strength, and steel construction does not cost the maximum amount as concrete or wood construction usually does. It is important to notice that there are various advantages of using steel over wood in construction, and the number of places beginning to incline towards using steel supported its numerous benefits, it has become very common. Steel construction environment friendly and may resist natural calamities like earthquakes, floods, etc.

Most common types of steel used in construction

  1. Hot Rolled Deformed Bars
  2. Cold Rolled Steel Bars
  3. Mild Steel Bars
  4. Twisted Steel Bars
  5. Welded Steel Wire

Hot Rolled Deformed Bars

Hot-rolled deformed bars also are referred to as Thermo Mechanically Treated bars or TMT Bars. In RCC (Reinforced Concrete Structure), TMT Bars are commonly used for their superior lastingness. The TMT Bars provide superior bonding in Cement Concrete highest quality TMT Bars feature a lastingness of 64000 psi (PSI – Strength of Concrete is measured in pounds per square inch).

Cold Rolled Steel Bars

Cold Rolled Steel bars look similar to Hot rolled bars although these are made at temperature. These bars consist of poor strength and simply bendable. Cold Rolled bars are almost obsolete from the market though these are used for a few constructions that do not need much tolerance. It carries lastingness up to 60000 psi.

Mild Steel Bars

This bar does not have any ribs; it comes with a plain surface and in shape, low-carbon steel Bars are utilized in RCC for beams, slabs, etc. The lastingness is up to 40000 psi. Low-carbon steel bars does not bond well with concrete and its poor in quality which is why it is utilized in small projects with budget constraint.

Twisted Steel Bars

Twisted Steel Bars also are referred to as Prestressing tendons. These are comprised of various wires almost 7 wires spun together into a strand. Twisted Steel Bar carries high lastingness up to 270000 psi. These bars are mostly employed in braces of scaffolds for prestressing Reinforced Cement Concrete. Its high-lastingness makes it conceivable in various projects.

Welded Steel Wire

Welded Steel Wires contain weld mesh. It produces medium lastingness. These are used for partitions, fencing, etc. It is available in several diameters and therefore the strength is above the low-carbon steel bar, which is why it is widely accepted for particular segments in construction for better efficiency.

It is important to understand that Thermo Mechanically Treated bars (TMT Bars) are widely accepted worldwide for their high lastingness. TMT Bars not only provide strength it is flexible enough also that is why it gives maximum protection during any natural disaster like an earthquake, flood, etc. TMT Bars consists of less amount of carbon that is why it is less fatigue and highly corrosion resistant too.

As per IS Standards Fe 500d grade of TMT Bar has the right combination of strength & flexibility. That is why it is most recommended for construction purposes.

General Precautions for Steel Bars in Reinforcement

  1. Steel bars are clear, free from loose mill scales, dust, and loose rust coats of paints, oil, or other coatings which can destroy or reduce bond strength.
  2. Steel bars should be stored in such how on avoid distortion and to stop deterioration and corrosion.
  3. Bars should not be clean with oily substances to get rid of rust.
  4. The bar is bent correctly and accurately to the dimensions and shape as shown in drawings.
  5. The overlap should be proper; it should not be uneven.
  6. Cranks are to be positioned well.
  7. The steel bars should be given cover before laying the concrete.
  8. If having a diameter of more than 36 mm, the bar should be welded as needed.

Conclusion

Steel bars have high tensile strength making them in demand especially in construction these days. Through this article, we came across the types of steel that are used in construction and precautions while using reinforcement steel. If you are thinking of employing steel reinforcement in your house construction or renovation, hire industry experts like VRKP.
