While the 2020 edition was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship is officially a go.
After months in the Calgary bubble, where Canadian champions were crowned — including the mixed doubles duo competing this week — and the world’s women’s and men’s titles handed out, the scene shifts to Europe.
Before 2020, the tournament was open to all available member associations; 48 teams competed in 2019. The competition is limited to the top 20 eligible associations for this year’s tournament, which begins May 17.
Teams include Canada’s dynamic duo of Kerri Einarson and Brad Gushue. Einarson, who skipped the 2020 and 2021 Scotties champions, teamed up with three-time Brier champion skip Gushue. With Canada finishing as runners-up in 2019 and 2017 (and third in 2018), the pair will set their sights on the country’s first mixed doubles title in the 13th edition of the tournament.
The route to the gold medal will be tough, however, with several competitors having already won gold. The defending champs, Sweden, are half back; Oskar Eriksson, who won in 2019, returns without his teammate Anna Hasselborg. He’ll be competing with Almida de Val in 2021. Two-time champs Dorottya Palancsa and Zsolt Kiss are back for Hungary; the duo won in 2013 and 2015. And Switzerland’s Martin Rios and Jenny Perret, winners in 2017 are back as well. Rios also won in 2012 with Nadine Lehmann.
International curling comes home to its birth nation when the World Curling Federation stages the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2021 in Curl Aberdeen, Scotland, next week.
Due to take place between 17–23 May, this championship sees teams representing 20 international Member Associations, and is the fourth event to be staged by the World Curling Federation in a 2020–2021 season truncated by pandemic challenges.

Why is Russia listed as ‘RCF’?
The World Anti-Doping Agency banned Russia from international competition for four years last December. The ban includes Olympic Games and world championships and Russia’s flag or name cannot be used. Athletes, however, are not banned from competing but can only do so under a neutral flag.
RCF stands for Russian Curling Federation.
